Only 2 days to wait and HTC is going to announce the successor of the HTC One. There were already some details about the device leaked but we don't want to go into details about it. We are going to see all specs and goodies of it in less than two days. HTC is also going to present the next version of Sense at their launch event at this day. So there are a lot of good things we are all waiting for.

And now the best things. Virtuous Team represented by our contributor @andrdnl is live at the London launch event from HTC. There will be a live coverage from the whole event and we will also try to get some backstage information after the event. Andrei is also doing his best to get some hands on time with the new device. So if you have some questions we should try to answer you post them here on the blog.

And HTC itself has a big goody for all of us. They are offering a live stream from the New York event which is at the same time as the one in London.

Today we are introducing Virtuous Widgets. In a nutshell it's an Android app for HTC Sense 4 devices that allows you to use widgets on the lockscreen of your device.

It works much like the popular app WidgetLocker, however our app is based on HTC's Sense 4 SDK and features therefore perfect integration with the stock lockscreen and doesn't suffer from all problems that other Lockscreen replacements face.

Virtuous Widgets uses the standard Lockscreen style selection dialog which is already well known to most Sense 4 users.
Before getting too much into detail, here is a quick screenshot of how your personalized lockscreen could look like:

(open the post to keep on reading)

You see, it does not only look like the stock lockscreen, it also works like the stock one. Much like you can choose between different pre-installed lockscreens like Productivity, People or Stocks, Virtuous Widgets can be enabled exactly the same way:

Once you click on Apply, the configuration dialog pops up (you can get there via the Settings button too, but you need to click on Apply once to actually tell Sense to use our lockscreen) and you can start setting up your all personalized lockscreen.
Once in you are in the settings screen you can add widgets and shortcuts and place them in a grid just like a normal launcher. Widgets can be also resized according to your needs. To resize a widget just move it and drop it in the same place as before:

There are two versions of Virtuous Widgets:

A free version that supports only up to one widget and won't let you add shortcuts

A paid premium version without any restrictions

Before using the app please note that there are a few things to keep in mind:

This apps only works on Sense 4.x ROMs

Custom ROMs might face several issues, the app was developed for stock devices, if your ROM chef screws something, we can't do anything about it

As said above, the apps works fine on stock phones, no root or unlocked bootloader needed.

You won't be able to use the HTC widgets (eg. Friendstream) because HTC uses a propietary format for the widgets.

Paid premium version

Free version

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-90192530933811015292012-08-17T13:11:00.000+01:002012-08-17T13:16:43.419+01:00Theming HTC Sense - We did it again

Ever since HTC released the first version of their 'new' Sense experience (3.0 and upwards) themers faced a huge problem. The majority of graphic assets used by Sense was hidden in the custom 'm10' files.

Back in these days Flemmard and Diamondback managed to crack these files open, giving the users the ability to extract, edit and repack the images.
It didn't take long until HTC switched the internal image format of these files and theming support for the upcoming Sense versions was lost (3.5 and later).

Only recently Flemmard and Diamondback achieved another breakthrough, they finally found out what the mysterious image were all about. Thanks to their great efforts and the amazing theming skills of Cypis we are finally able to present you:

the world's first fully featured Sense 4 skin

The Virtuous Slate skin comes in a handy single-apk download right from the Google Play store.

It features a very classy and timeless design, without any distracting decorations or adornments.
See yourself in the screenshots from Google Play.

The skin currently comes in two versions. A HD version and a qHD one. This is very important. Based on what device you are using, you need to download the correct skin.

Devices with a native resolution of 720p like the One X or the One XL need to download the HD version. This also includes devices running a custom ROM based on a One X/XL ROM. (no matter what screen resolution)

Devices with a native qHD resolution (like the One S) or devices that run a custom port based on a Sense 4 ROM for a qHD device need to download the qHD version. This is also the correct option for users running Virtuous Infinity.

So all in all: If your device runs a ROM based on a HD ROM, use the HD skin, if your device runs a ROM on qHD basis, use the qHD skin.

We need to distribute two seperate versions because qHD and HD ROMs need differently sized images. Unfortunately we can't put that in one apk.

We would like to say a big thank you to nitsuj17 for fixing the issues on the Inc 2.

Sadly he was unsuccessful, so this release is a little later than we would of liked.

We also been unable to fix camera as you all know this should be a lot easier once we get official ICS for devices like the Desire S and HD.

This release reintroduces the Virtuous Tweaks application.

This has again been developed using the HTC Sense SDK and has been built from the ground up by chrisch1974, it not quite as extensive as the Affinity Tweaks app but its early days.

Incredible 2 is still not officially supported, we are working with XDA recognized developer nitsju17 to get it fully functional. Hopefully we can release an incremental update in the coming days that will bring the Inc 2 in line with other devices.

To get started you should know the basics. The next blog posts will tell you how to do the following things:

Create a new project

Import a file to your new project

Editing files

2. Import a file to your new project

Importing a file can be done in two different ways. The first one – preferred for new projects – was already explained in part 1 of the Basics.
The second way – usually used during the work on a project – is as simple as the first one.
Just right click the project you want to use for the import and select “Import file”

As you can see there are two possible sources for the import file:

Import from a local file on your HDD

Import from a remote device connected via ADB to your computer

Importing from your HDD doesn’t really need any explanations so let me explain you the remote import. The remote input window looks like this:

You can see three lists of apps after a short time of loading. Depending on the project type you can select the file you want to import.

The actual import might take a while depending on the apk you selected.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-71581982760532170202012-04-23T07:43:00.001+01:002012-04-27T06:28:11.151+01:00Virtuous Inquisition 4.0.2 Beta SeriesI really did very little for this release. To get started you should know the basics. The next blog posts will tell you how to do the following things:

Create a new project

Import a file to your new project

Editing files

Build your project to get the modified apk file

Push the apk to your device

Open the post to keep on reading…
1. Creating a new Project

That’s usually the first thing you want to do once working with a new apk. Fire up Virtuous Ten Studio and click on “File” –> “New Project”.
You will see the following window:

This window has several important parts:

The project type list

Project description

Project- and Solution names

Solution location

The tabs on the left side

Lets start with the project list. VTS offers different project types (currently two, at least one other is coming in the future). Each type is suited for a specific task. As the names suggest one project is for working with the apks, the other one for framework jars.

The projects differ in the way decompiling/compiling is handled and what kind of options they offer. To get started, just select the right project type (please also note the description on the right side, explaining the use of a project)

Projects in VTS are grouped into one Solution, much like modern IDEs (Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.)
One project always represents one apk or jar file.
If you create the first project you need to specify not only the project name but also the solution name and –location.

Once you load the Apk-Tool tab you will see this:

ApkTool is necessary for many features so you need to specify which ApkTool to use. VTS supports individual ApkTool versions for each project. You can also choose whether you want to decompile the resources and if there should be any Java code generation (dex2jar and jad are used for this)

Once you entered all the needed details, you can click OK and proceed to step two. More on that in the next blog entry.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-12129447633960999702012-04-18T01:00:00.000+01:002012-04-17T23:56:42.663+01:00Virtuous Ten Studio: Navigating in smali code
For a long time smali code was hard to handle. Not only the missing highlighting, but also the very limited possibilities of navigating through smali was a key problem for your daily smali work.

This time is over now. Virtuous Ten Studio features powerful navigation commands inside smali code. Just like any other modern IDE you can do several jumps:

To classes

To the implementation of method calls

To the implementation of fields

To label targets (GOTOs)

Open the post to continue reading…
The actual jump is initiated by holding [CTRL] and clicking on the source (class name, field, method, GOTO command). Have a look at this screenshot (please note, the image was created from several screenshots to show more information in one )

Another very useful feature is the resolving of IDs within smali. If you don’t know what I am talking about, let me explain it.
Resources like strings, arrays, booleans, etc. are referenced by IDs in smali. These IDs are saved in a file called public.xml. This file then references entries in several other files like strings.xml, bools.xml, arrays.xml and a few others.

Virtuous Ten Studio can resolve these IDs and display their names and values. Have a look at the next screenshot:

This makes understanding the code a lot easier when such references are used.

Another useful feature is the line marking. You can mark any line in smali so you can keep track of important smali parts. You can also easily navigate between those marked lines:

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-29220901729294054762012-04-16T12:08:00.000+01:002012-04-17T01:19:30.888+01:00Virtuous Ten Studio: Debugging your phoneOne important part of working with smali is debugging the modified apk. The easiest way to do so is using the Logcat. While this is only a minor feature in VTS it is worth pointing it out.

Lets start with a screenshot:

As you can see the Logcat Viewer makes reading Logcats quite a bit easier. You can filter the out by:

Verbosity (Warnings, Errors, Debug, etc.)

Include text (this text needs to appear in the log entry)

Exclude text (this text must not appear in the entry)

Here is a screenshot of a filtered output:

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-25851666599596589412012-04-14T15:46:00.002+01:002012-04-14T15:52:51.171+01:00Virtuous Inquisition for myTouch 4G Slide updateThe Virtuous Inquisition was launched recently for the powerful htc device with keyboard, myTouch 4G Slide, and since then a couple of device specific fixes were released for it. Most of you might be already familiar with this ROM, that is an ICS desensed rom, that is as close to AOSP as possible. So this time mt4gs owners, rejoice, you can now download and flash it on your device! :)

Head to our Inquisition Section for more information and download link.

rootz forum thread.pzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941878855697739731noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-33312120178615952102012-03-31T01:25:00.000+01:002012-04-17T17:30:50.266+01:00Virtuous Ten Studio: Editing smali codeEditing smali code used to be a pain. Even for the more experienced developers amongst us, smali always was nothing you really enjoyed. If you knew what you are doing you usually got the job done, but it never was really fun to work with smali.
This time is over now. With VTS you will love to work with smali (as long as you like coding in general)
All these basic development workflow steps which used to be not available are now here:

Syntax highlightning

Listing fields

Listing methods

Jumping along gotos

Jumping to methods

…

Open this post to continue reading...
These features might sounds not so important, but if you ever worked with smali, you know how bad their absence really is.
So lets have a closer look at the first feature: syntax highlighting.
For those that are unaware, syntax highlighting basically means that different parts of the code are colored in different ways.
Here are two pictures, showing the difference between stock code and highlighted code:

As you can see, the highlighted code is much easier to read, especially if there is not only a short piece of code but more than 3.000 lines of smali.
VTS comes with an inbuilt set of highlightning rules, however the user can easily create his own version if needed.
Stay tuned for the next post to get an insight in the listing of fields and methods, another very useful smali feature in VTS.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-68937130948725186872012-03-30T10:46:00.003+01:002012-03-30T10:50:04.772+01:00Petition to HTC to release new device with hardware keyboardIf you feel like there should be a new powerful HTC device released that comes with a hardware keyboard and modern hardware, so you can replace good old Desire Z, please consider signing this petition we recently started:

Keyboard petition

Also don't forget to tweet, facebook etc. about this article or the petition, so we might have all the possible signature on it. :)pzihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15941878855697739731noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-23876922010605625642012-03-30T01:29:00.000+01:002012-04-17T17:29:49.539+01:00What is Virtuous Ten Studio?
Some of you might have already heard about a tool which is not yet released but has created quite a buzz in the Android community..

I am talking about Virtuous Ten Studio, the next step in the evolution of apk editing.
Virtuous Ten Studio (VTS) is not just a compilation of different tools to speed up development, it is far more. WIth the help of a few people I was able to create a tool which is best described as

“The Visual Studio for Android reverse engineering”.

My goal was to provide you a completely new experience with never before seen features as well as creating something that is easy for people of all experience levels to use.

The main features can be split up in three main categories:

Editing smali code

Editing m10 files (HTC UI design files)

Editing other important files from apks (xml, manifest, etc)

I plan on releasing more posts here in the near future covering a few of the awesome features of VTS. The three main categories mentioned above are filled up with features and handy helpers, you will be surprised how much easier apk editing is with VTS.

For the start I will show you a screenshot of my latest development build. Rootz do a lot of good work for the Android community and really supports its developers really well.

Active Threads

Primadonna

Desire Z/G2

Desire HD

Inspire 4G

My Touch 4G

Desire S

Incredible S

Eclipse

Sensation

EVO 3D

S-Series

One XL

One X

One S

Transformer Prime

Inquisition

Sensation

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-923553537982354870.post-31790140911960939372012-03-22T15:41:00.000+00:002012-03-22T16:10:51.714+00:00Virtuous Primadonna - X-SeriesWe are pleased to announce the first release of Virtuous Primadonna, this is based on the leaked 1.56.401.11 release RUU.
HTC Desire S

HTC Desire HD

HTC EVO 3D

HTC EVO Design 4G

HTC Incredible S

HTC Sensation 4G

HTC Sensation XE

HTC Raider

HTC Rezound

HTC Rhyme

HTC Thunderbolt

HTC Vivid

Now for me and many fans of Virtuous ROM's there is a device missing from that list.
The Desire Z was released at the same time as the Desire HD but has always been considered the weaker device and as such did not receive an update to sense 3.x, in away I am grateful that it did not. Most of us are aware of the performance issues with sense 3 ROM's.

The announcement of the HTC One V gave us a glimmer of hope though, a device with similar specs to the Desire Z but running ICS and Sense 4.0.

I believe that Desire Z users have been forgotten about and I think the lack of updates from HTC is not good enough so I ask you to sign a petition to get HTC to release an update for the Desire Z, it will take you 30 seconds and if enough people sign who know maybe we will get something.
After you have signed please tweet, post on facebook and if you have a blog or website republish this article.

The online petition can be found here
Thanks in advance for you time, hope fully we can get somewhereUnknownnoreply@blogger.com3
